RFQ Expedition Asia - Tiger and Sloth Bear Habitat

The project site is located in the western part of Sunset Zoo, in the Asian Forest Trail section of exhibits. The proposed project will create a new tiger and sloth bear exhibit, renovate an existing Amur leopard exhibit (Bid Alternate), and construct an ADA accessible walkway, viewing pavilion, and related site improvements. The tiger and bear exhibits range from 7,411 square foot to 10,840 square foot habitats with multiple viewing stations for guests and enrichment opportunities for the animals. All new containment fence will be installed for the new yards, which will include new training wall features where keepers can interact with the tigers and bears and educate the guests. The renovated leopard exhibit will be approximately 3,700 square feet, with the expansion to the south and west. Additional shade will be provided by mature shade trees that currently lie outside the yard. A new feeding/training area will highlight the new habitat with the opportunity for guests to observe training sessions with the animal care staff. All three exhibits will feature new holding buildings, along with an ADA accessible walkway and elevated viewing pavilion. The tiger, sloth bear and Amur leopard exhibits will be accessed from the main entrance to the Zoo. Although the general circulation around the perimeter of the exhibits will function much as it does currently, public access to the new tiger, sloth bear and Amur leopard yards will be limited during construction. All attempts will be made to ensure the Zoo will be open to the public during construction, with only the project site closed to the public.
